What do you love most about where you live?

Home for me right now is the basin which 'feeds' the city of Malaga, Andalucia in southern Spain. I adore it. .. the whispers of the it's ancient past when the phoenecians, romans, moors, early jews and later catholics walked here. There are herds of goats which roam around the land I live on, and olive trees with silver leaves, orange blossom fed by the ancient moorish water courses, and rabbits munching sweet shoots in the early morning till the hot fiery sun burns everything dry in a couple of weeks. The mountains outside my window lie between me and the Mediterranean sea which still is home to dolphins and whales. Across the waters lies Africa and only a few mile west are the Straits of Gibraltar where the Riff mountains of Morocco meet the European continent. Africa and Europe butt up against each other here, the Americas feel closer because the Atlantic crashes on to the sands beyond the straits and yet we are still joined-at-the-hip to Brussels and all that it entails. And the endless daily jets to northern europe's capital and not-so-capital cities. This area is 'home' to the Costa del Sol - one of northern europe's most over-developed, abused and ruined playgrounds. There is a community of foreigners living here who never learn to speak Spanish .. most are running from something: grey skies, debt, the law or some other responsibilities. The mafiosos are thick on the ground not far from here. And things are slowly changing too.. town halls are being brought to account and ex-mayors do time in the local jail where their fathers and uncles locked-up the opposers of dictatorship and so forth .. this gives it a wild-west feel which doesn't exist much in Europe and which I appreciate for the possiblities it brings. There are always choices.
